I feel your despair. I left Hungary in 2012 and the last few months really felt like I am living in a constant déja vu. The pattern is the same. First the schock, then the wishful thinking that eventually the electorate will realize that the populists cannot deliver (spoiler alert: they won't), the opposition will be busy with some symbolic rearguard action for a while and then slowly but surely the apathy kicks in.
I visited Hungary at the turn of the century and fell in love with the country and its people. Since then, I watched the rise of Fidesz, Orbán, and repression with alarm and sadness. You have been the canary and the miners are not listening.

@humanhorseshoes @markhburton There was a bit of pussyfooting at first, and Merkel looking aside in exchange for Big Auto's interests in HU. Then they had to keep their own rules of due process and long deadlines. But it happened for the first time a few weeks ago that HU permamently lost about a billion EUR and this will continue. The weakening of the HU economy might topple Orban's power in 2026.

Hopes aka Constraints
1. Local backup disk share
I'm hoping to share a disk or two at home for a family of 5, each with 0.5-5 TB of data on their personal computers. Primary use would be personal computer backup, but I'd hope to gather family media history there as well.
2. Local services
I need to run at least Home Assistant and Unifi network server. They may live on a separate box, but could live on the NAS given sufficient oomph (seems mainly RAM constrained).
3. Internet services
I also hope to some day open selected services (web apps, maybe ssh/rsync) to the internet now that we have excessively sufficient connection (and relatively safely separable networks) for that.
The internet services (think, say, Friendica) should be able to utilize some of the disk space of the NAS (assuming I don't end up with a full web server with its own disks) but be kept safely out of the disk space for local (family) use. (Preparing for potential 0-days here might provide us with some fascinating design puzzles :))
4. Budget
Looking at the prices of NAS boxes, I don't want to shell out hundreds of euros. I hope to keep this hobby project under 200 euros (not counting later extensions nor maintenance). Prices of the disk drives themselves would not be counted into that budget; they're maintenance (start with what i have, buy more as necessary).
5. Quality
All I would need would be a box that could sustain >1Gbps over both Ethernet and SATA (or USB3) running Linux (or BSD?). Electricity consumption while idle should be minimal.
The solution should be reasonably expected to keep running for years, idling ~6h twice per day.
6. Availability to Finland
I should be able to get the solution in Finland. Any additional taxes should be counted as part of the budget.
I'll provide a bit more background and some potential solutions below.
I have had prior success with a 2007 Mac Mini 2,1 combined with a two-disk USB dock. The Mac Mini's USB 2 interface eventually became too slow as backup sizes grew.
I still have the dock, and don't see why not to keep using it if necessary, as it's USB-3 and seems fast enough when connected to my desktop (ok, could still be faster).
I'll use that Mac Mini for the other services if the NAS box is too small for them. The hard part is getting Linux installed; now that I can boot it to rEFInd and MacOS (10.6.8), I can probably just copy the installation media content to a (GPT?) partition on its new SSD and see if it would agree to start from there.
I'm currently thinking of maybe ordering an Odroid-H3 but would like to hear some experiences from fellow Finns
- How did you order it, from where? - What should I order alongside it? - Taxes/expenses accumulated on the way? - How's it been?
This is by far the most powerful of the devices I've been able to dig up, what with RAM upgradable to 64GB, 2 x 2.5Gbit Ethernet ports, and 2 x SATA 3.0 ports.
All the devices I've found tend to come with GPUs or like integrated solutions, which I would not need in a headless device, and other unnecessary stuff (audio), but the important bit is ability to serve disk space over Ethernet at sustained (multi?)gigabit speed without warming up to damaging levels. As well as being actually available in or to Finland.

Ennen kirjoittelin blogiin “oikeita juttuja”, WordPressistä ja sekalaisista nörttijutuista. Olinhan IT-ihminen, kun olin vielä töissä. Nyt ollessani eläköitynyt vaari-ihminen, kirjoittelen harvemmin ja pitkälti vain oman elämän hömpsötyksistä. Sen myötä interaktiot blogikirjoituksiin ovat selvästi vähentyneet. Ei niitä enää jaeta saati sitten että keräisivät kommentointeja. Ei se ole minua haitannut, elämä on muuttunut, rauhallisemmaksi.
Nyt kuitenkin “jostain kumman syystä” blogiin on ilmestynyt kommentteja, oikeilta ihmisiltä eikä spämmiroboteilta. No se kumma syy on tietty se, että kytkin WordPress -sivustoni Fediversumiin. Asensin ActivityPub -lisäosan ja simsalabim, sivustostani tuli osa fediä. Aina kun julkaisen artikkelin, putkahtaa se saman tien fediversumiin. Seuraan fedissä omaa blogiprofiiliani ja usein myös sitten itse boostaan sitä julkaistua artikkelia. Jos ja kun ihmiset tykkäävät tai vastaavat kirjoitukseen, ilmestyvät ne blogikirjoitukseen kommenteiksi. Tämähän on tosi kiva ja lämmittää minua suuresti. Vaikka nykyään ikäänkuin kirjoittelen itselleni, niin on kuitenkin mukava, kun huomaa, että joku on sen lukenut ja reagoi siihen. Ihan niin kuin ennen vanhaan blogosfäärissä. Näen myös WordPressin hallintasivuilta kätevästi kaikki kommentit sekä blogini seuraajat ja artikkelin lopussa tykkäykset avatarien kera.
No, ei minulla mitään sen kummempaa markkinointitarvetta omille jutuilleni ole, mutta ajattelen heitä monia, jotka tänne fediin ovat tulleet nyt pakoon X:stä ja Metan palveluista. Moni on vielä työelämässä ja kirjoittavat blogia ja se saattaa olla heille tärkeä bisneksen apuväline. Heille näkisin tuon ActivityPub -lisäosan tuoman näkyvyyshyödyn olevan potentiaalinen.
Tuon ActivityPub -lisäosan asentaminen ja konfigurointi omaan WordPress -sivustoon on helppoa, suosittelen sitä lämpimästi. Otsikko Likes on englanniksi, vaikka kaikki lisäosan stringit on 100% käännetty. Tuota sanaa ei ko. lisäosan hallinnoija ole ehkä muistanut tuoda kääntämisen piiriin.
Lasten tiedekysymyksissä oli muutes joskus toi, että onko maailmassa enemmän pehmeitä vai kovia juttuja. Geologi vastas, että jos pehmee juttu määritellään niin, että siihen voi upottaa sormet, ni maailmassa on enemmän pehmeitä juttuja, koska maapallon ydin on sula. En kyllä uskaltais upottaa sormia siihen.
